UTM parameters are five additions to a URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) that Google Analytics and any other analytics platform use to identify which ad, post or email brought in the visitor. Without them, everything from Facebook and Viber is counted as “direct” traffic, so you do not know what works.
The generator writes values in lowercase, without spaces or Cyrillic characters in the parameters, because Analytics counts “Facebook” and “facebook” as two different sources. We use the same rules in the campaigns we run for clients.
- utm_source is where it came from (facebook, google, viber, newsletter), utm_medium is the channel type (cpc for paid advertising, social for an organic post, email, messaging), and utm_campaign is the campaign. term and content are optional.
- Do not add UTM parameters to internal links on your own website: this resets the session and causes you to lose the true source.
Questions and answers
A regular page URL with parameters added after a question mark, for example ?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=prolet. The same page opens, but analytics records where the visitor came from.
Source is the specific platform: facebook, google, viber, newsletter. Medium is the channel type: cpc (pay-per-click), social (free post), email, messaging, referral. The same source can have different mediums: facebook/cpc for an ad and facebook/social for a post.
If Google Ads and Google Analytics are connected with auto-tagging (gclid), it is not required. However, UTM does no harm and helps when you also use another analytics or CRM system that reads the source.
Technically, yes, but the URL becomes long and difficult to read, and some systems encode it differently. Use Latin characters: prolet-2026, nov-produkt.
Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition: the Session source / medium and Session campaign columns. Or use Explore with the Session source, Session medium and Session campaign dimensions.
Yes. In the CRM systems we build, the website form also sends the UTM parameters, so you can see which campaign each customer came from and how much they cost.
