VAT number check

Check in real time whether a Bulgarian or European business partner's VAT number is valid in the European Commission's VIES system before issuing an invoice with 0% VAT. Free, no registration required.

Check a VAT number in VIES

Without the country prefix. For Bulgaria: 9 or 10 digits.

The check is performed live in the European Commission's VIES system. We do not store the numbers.

Free, no registration required. Your data stays in your browser.

Before invoicing an intra-Community supply without VAT, the law requires you to check that the buyer has a valid VAT number in their country. The check here is performed directly in VIES, the European Commission's register, and returns the name and address when the country provides them.

For a Bulgarian number, enter the UIC (9 digits) or UCN/PNC (10 digits) without BG at the beginning. This is the same check we automate in the invoicing and ERP systems we build.

  • VIES confirms whether the number is valid at the time of the check. An invalid number may mean that the company is not VAT-registered, not that it does not exist.
  • Germany, Spain and some other countries do not return a name and address. In that case, you will see only "valid" and the date of the check.
  • If a country's register is down, VIES returns an error. Try again in a few minutes.

Questions and answers

VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is the European Commission's system that queries national VAT registers to check whether a number is valid. It does not keep a separate database: it forwards the request to the country associated with the number.

BG plus the company's UIC (9 digits) or the individual's UCN/PNC (10 digits). For example, BG123456789. Do not enter the BG prefix in the number field.

Yes. For an intra-Community supply, a condition for applying the zero rate is that the recipient has a valid VAT number in another Member State. Keep proof of the check: the date and result.

Some countries, such as Germany and Spain, do not provide a name and address because of their data protection rules. The number is valid, the details are simply not displayed.

A UIC is checked in the Commercial Register (registryagency.bg). VIES only confirms whether the company is VAT-registered. A company with a UIC but without VAT registration will appear as invalid here.

Yes. In the ERP and invoicing systems we build, the number is checked when a new business partner is added and the result is saved with their record. Contact us if you use another system and want this check added.
