The standard VAT rate in Bulgaria is 20 %. The reduced rate of 9 % applies to hotel accommodation, books and textbooks, baby food and certain other supplies, while 0 % applies to exports and intra-Community supplies. The calculator works both ways: enter the net amount to get the gross amount, or enter the final price to get the base amount and tax.
This tool is the part of our free invoicing software that people most often look for separately. If you also need the invoice itself, you will find it on the invoicing software page, also with no registration required.
- From the final price to the base amount: divide the price by 1.20 at 20 %, and VAT is the difference. Calculating 20 % of the final price is a mistake that inflates the tax.
- We round to the nearest cent at line level. On the invoice, tax is calculated on the total taxable base, so with many lines containing fractional amounts, there may be a difference of one cent.
Questions and answers
Multiply the amount by the rate: at 20 %, an amount of 100 € has 20 € VAT and a final price of 120 €. At 9 %, VAT is 9 € and the final price is 109 €.
Divide the final price by 1 plus the rate: 120 € divided by 1.20 equals a base amount of 100 €, and VAT is 20 €. At 9 %, divide by 1.09.
For hotel accommodation and similar establishments, printed or electronic books and textbooks, baby and toddler food, nappies and similar childcare hygiene products. The exact list is set out in Articles 66 and 66a of the VAT Act.

When taxable turnover exceeds the threshold under Article 96 of the VAT Act during the last 12 months (166 000 BGN from 01.01.2025, converted to euros at the fixed exchange rate), or voluntarily at any time. Registration must be filed with the NRA within 7 days of reaching the threshold.
The calculator has no currency: the number is the same in euros and leva. From 01.01.2026, invoices in Bulgaria are in euros; use the euro and leva calculator for currency conversion.
